“Chateau – Feelings / Strike A Spark” es una joya escondida del funk de la Costa Oeste que regresa en todo su esplendor gracias a la reedición de Past Due Records. Grabado originalmente en 1983 y lanzado al año siguiente en el sello Quiet Storm Records, este 7” de 45 RPM captura la esencia más pura del boogie funk californiano, con un groove irresistible que ha sobrevivido al paso del tiempo y sigue encendiendo pistas de baile en cada vuelta de aguja.
La historia detrás de este vinilo es tan legendaria como su sonido. Chateau, una banda de San Francisco formada por músicos con un talento desbordante, se ganó su oportunidad tras ganar el concurso KRE Radio Hot Fun In The Sun en Oakland, donde el premio fue tiempo de estudio y una tirada limitada de apenas 200 copias del sencillo. El grupo, encabezado por Alan Ross en voces principales y percusión, junto a la cantante Damara “Candy” Stepney y el multifacético Kevin Dailey —quien alternaba entre saxofón, bajo y guitarra—, entregó dos piezas cargadas de alma y ritmo: “Feelings” y “Strike A Spark”.
“Feelings” es puro sentimiento funk, con un bajo elegante y una línea vocal que flota sobre una base rítmica firme y cálida. Tiene esa textura analógica y orgánica que solo el vinilo puede ofrecer: cruda, sincera y hecha para sonar fuerte. Por su parte, “Strike A Spark” mantiene la energía con una vibra más explosiva, perfecta para abrir un set de boogie o cerrar la noche con un toque sofisticado.
